Minister McLeod to Push for NWT Interests at Committee of Internal Trade

The Honourable Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, is attending a federal/provincial/territorial meeting on the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) being held October 15th in Whitehorse.This is the annual meeting of the Committee of Internal Trade. Eight Ministers from the provinces and territories are attending.

Topics being discussed will include chapters on Agriculture, Energy, Labour Mobility, Dispute Resolution, Regulatory Harmonization, Procurement and accession by Nunavut to the AIT.

The Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) is an intergovernmental trade agreement signed by Canadian First Ministers that came into force in 1995. Its purpose is to reduce and eliminate, to the extent possible, barriers to the free movement of persons, goods, services, and investment within Canada and to establish an open, efficient, and stable domestic market.

While in Whitehorse, the Minister will also meet with the Yukon Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Archie Lang. They will speak about future economic opportunities, including those arising from the Mackenzie Valley Gas Pipeline, and oil and gas development.
