Two members of the 16th Legislative Assembly will be working towards NWT interests at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) Economic Leadership Forum this week. Bob McLeod, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, and Member of the Legislative Assembly Mr. David Ramsay, Chair of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Infrastructure, will be travelling to the Forum to be held November 4th to 7th in Regina, Saskatchewan.

“PNWER provides a tremendous chance for us to advertise the economic opportunities the NWT possesses, and to work towards creating even more opportunities for the future,” said Minister McLeod. “The GNWT is committed to building a strong and diversified economy for our residents, and this is one of many ways we work towards that.”

During the Forum, the Minister and MLA will attend an organizational meeting of the Northern Pipeline Coordinating Council, established to coordinate cross-border logistics, workforce issues, and other key topics surrounding northern pipelines.

The Northwest Territories became a member of PNWER in July 2009. PNWER is a statutory public/private partnership established in 1991. In addition to the Northwest Territories, PNWER members include the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

As an organization the goals of PNWER are to:
• promote greater regional collaboration;
• enhance the competitiveness of the region in both domestic and international markets;
• leverage regional influence in Ottawa and in Washington D.C.; and
• achieve continued economic growth while maintaining the region's natural beauty and environment.
