Students across the Northwest Territories (NWT) joined parents and sponsors in their workplaces today for the annual Take Our Kids to Work Day.

Many businesses opened their doors to grade nine students to give them a glimpse of different career options and unique work environments.

Communities throughout the NWT are busy celebrating Career Week with workshops, career fairs, open houses and presentations.

Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) Jackson Lafferty was joined at work by his daughter Cheyenne.

“The Government of the Northwest Territories is committed to ensuring that our youth have the skills and resources they need to realize their full potential,” he said. “I hope residents will take advantage of the opportunities identified this week to advance and develop careers for the future.”

Regional ECE Services Centres promote career development and are actively engaging the public in Career Week activities. Career Development Officers help clients realize their career goals through various education and training opportunities.

ECE has partnered with BHP Billiton on an exciting new pilot project called Career Focusing designed to help students get ready for post secondary educational pursuits.

Career Focusing recognizes everyone’s uniqueness and celebrates the importance of diversity. It provides a clear process for students to learn what motivates them and focus on their personal goals, which then helps students make career decisions by matching their focus with opportunities in the work world.

As the lead financial partner, BHP is covering all costs related to training instructors to administer Career Focusing in schools. Teachers and career development officers are being trained to deliver the program that will enable NWT residents to reach their full potential, lead rewarding lives and contribute to a strong and prosperous society.
