The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay has completed its tour through the Northwest Territories (NWT). The Town of Inuvik was the first NWT community to be visited by the Olympic Torch on November 4, followed by Yellowknife, Dettah, and N’Dilo on November 5, 2009.

“The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay was a unique celebration that shed light on the people, places and pride of the NWT,” said the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister Responsible for Sport. “It was a great way for Northerners to take part in the celebration of our country hosting the Olympic Winter Games, and to showcase our artists and cultural performers to the world through our community celebrations.”

After completing its tour of the NWT, the Torch will now travel to Cold Lake, Alberta to continue its tour across Canada.

Over the course of the Torch Relay, there will be nearly 200 community celebrations from coast to coast to coast, and the Torch will have traveled by air, canoe, horse carriage, skis, kayak, snowmobile, tractor, bike and ferry.

Through its investment in the 2010 Winter Games, the GNWT is working to Maximize Opportunities by highlighting the NWT’s arts, culture and traditions to promote the NWT as a place to live and visit. Strengthening awareness of the NWT’s northern identity and uniqueness will work to promote a strong and independent North as envisioned in the 16th Assembly’s Vision of Northerners Working Together.
