Premier Floyd Roland paid tribute to the Northwest Territories’ tourism industry Saturday.

Speaking to the Annual General Meeting of NWT Tourism in Yellowknife, the Premier recognized the many partners, organizations and contributors who collaborate to promote the NWT to visitors and travellers from around the world.

He saved his highest accolades for the 300 plus operators and service providers who comprise the front line of the NWT’s tourism industry itself.

“The success and significance of our tourism industry in the NWT is a tribute to those of you who continue to work and build your operations on service and reputation,” he said.

The Government of the Northwest Territories invested over $10 million in tourism last year to support and enhance the NWT tourism experience – and to build the NWT’s $130 million tourism sector through training, research and marketing initiatives.

Significant investments are being made to Maximize Opportunities during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics in order to highlight NWT talent, art and culture and to promote the North as a premier destination to live, visit and invest.

The Premier says Government investments in the tourism sector reflect the 16th Assembly’s priority to support the development of sustainable local economies and to meet the goal of a diversified economy that provides all regions with opportunities and choices.

“The tourism sector has the potential to stimulate viable and sustainable ventures in almost every NWT community,” the Premier noted. “Your Government is committed to tapping into the tremendous potential that exists and growing the tourism industry in the Northwest Territories.”
